I tried to think of other categories other than "albums or songs." Unfortunately I didn't run into the outstanding local artist or street musician while I was traveling. So, maybe this will be a disappointment because the list is rather "mainstream." The good thing is then you can check 'em out without having to fly all the way to Cuba or Peru or Mexico...

Rachael Yamagata's Be Be Your Love (song)
Listened to this one a lot. Her voice is beautiful and her singing simple yet skillful. I fell in love after the first few bars of the first song. She makes me think I'm not alone in the world.
Seu Jorge's Cru (album)
Funny enough, I listened to this creative, fun, interesting artist from Brazil while I was in Cuba. A lot. It fits, for some reason!
Jeremy Enigk's World Waits (album)
Took me through some stormy and lonely times while on the road. His music is otherworldly, creative, unexpected, emotional, hopeful. And, well, I kind of have a crush on him. (That's right, Sandra: Bring it on!)
Damien Rice's 9 (album)
Probably the most played album while in the car from California to Mexico. Not the best road trip music but it is Damien doing what he does best: combines intense heartache with gorgeous music. Just my cup of tea.
Sore (band)
Okay, technically Jakarta is not part of my road trip BUT! if you'll allow me: this band gives me hope for the Indonesian music scene. I saw them at a recent show here. They have a whimsical, retro, fun-but-mellow sound. Dare I say, they're a true indie; a breath of fresh air from the copycats.
